“Song Of My Heart”

“Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

“Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will He clothe you?” – Luke 12

The concept for this piece came to me during worship. In the eyes of my heart, I saw a sparrow and flowers, and remembered Luke 12:6-7, “Are not five sparrows sold for two pennies? Yet not one of them is forgotten by God. Indeed, even the hairs of your head are all numbered. Do not be afraid; you are worth more than many sparrows.”

And Luke 12:27-28, which reads, “Consider the lilies, how they grow: they neither toil nor spin; yet I tell you, even Solomon in all his glory was not clothed like one of these. If then God so clothes the grass of the field, which today is alive and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will He clothe you?”

I really wanted to combine chunky and bold creative marks with detail and refinement. I used collage techniques to fix sheet music and printed scripture paper to the canvas. I added paper with texture and built up bold flower petals impasto style. I wanted it to be a unique experience both visually and physically.

For my sparrow, I chose to take some inspiration from the “song sparrow” since I was lost in worship music when I was inspired to paint this piece! I included lilies that would have been seen in Palestine near the Sea of Galilee called “anemonies”.

I believe this painting symbolizes letting go of anxiety and trusting a loving God.
